Summer has come to a close and fall is right around the corner! Fall is a great season for family activities and elder care givers should get their parents involved as well. Here is a list of senior-friendly fall activities that elders and their care givers will enjoy.
Apple Picking- Walking or wheeling through an orchid gathering crisp, sweet apples is a great way to bond and enjoy the weather on a cool autumn day. You can even take the apples home and enjoy baking warm apple pie with the apples you both handpicked!
Canning the Last of the Summer Fruits and Veggies- Gather the remaining fruits and vegetables and preserve them to enjoy until next year. You can create jam, jellies or pie fillings out of the last of your peaches and berries.
Gardening- Just because summer has ended doesn’t mean your garden has to. Plant some mums or other fall flowers with your elder to get in the spirit of fall. You could also select flowers together that you want to see bloom next spring and help them plant the bulbs.
Go for a Ride- Even elders who can’t get around well can still enjoy the fall foliage. Take a drive together to admire all the leaves changing color.
Cook Together- Make a big pot of soup together on a chilly fall afternoon. You can even warm up and make mulled cider or hot toddies together.
Catch a Game- Fall means the start of football season. If your elder is a fan, make some game snacks and sit and watch the game together.
These are just a few of the many different ways to enjoy spending quality time if you are a care giver of an elder this fall. What are some of your favorite activities that you and your elder enjoy doing together?
